The neighbourhood
Southbank, east and west of the tower
The hotel faces the city across the river, but most of what is worth a short walk lies on its own bank: galleries and theatres to the east, the convention centre to the west.
Southbank is the suburb on the south side of the Yarra opposite the central business district; it shares the postcode 3006 with South Wharf next door (Wikipedia, secondary). Crown Melbourne takes up a long stretch of the riverbank, and Crown Towers stands near its eastern end, close to Queensbridge Street. Distances below are given as walking routes in Google Maps rather than as figures.
East along the river
Eureka Tower and Melbourne Skydeck
Eureka Tower, 297.3 metres and opened in October 2006, carries an observation deck on level 88 (Wikipedia, secondary). Its operator, Melbourne Skydeck, calls it the highest observation deck in the southern hemisphere and sells The Edge, a glass cube that extends three metres out from the building.
Arts Centre Melbourne
The Arts Centre's spire on St Kilda Road, 162 metres high, marks the theatres, including the State Theatre, and Hamer Hall on the riverbank (Wikipedia, secondary). Programme and ticket details are on the Arts Centre's own website.
NGV International
The National Gallery of Victoria's international collection is at 180 St Kilda Road, open daily from 10am to 5pm with free entry; special exhibitions may charge. The gallery's Australian collection is across the river at Federation Square, at the Ian Potter Centre, on the same hours. Until 13 December 2026 some NGV spaces may be closed for the installation of the NGV Triennial.

West, towards South Wharf
The Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre stands at South Wharf, on the western side of Crown. Tram stop 124A, which serves the hotel, is named Casino/MCEC for that reason. From November to April, the centre says, it hosts Banksy Limitless, which it describes as over 250 artworks. The Sandridge Bridge, a pedestrian and cycle crossing on an old railway bridge, links Southbank to the city side further east (Wikipedia, secondary).
Across the river
The central business district is on the opposite bank, reached over the bridges at Queens Bridge and Sandridge or by tram. Flinders Street Station and Federation Square are on that side. The arrival page gives tram routes and the stops on each line.
